The present HMS Iron Duke is the third ship to bear the name and the fifth Duke Class Type 23 Frigate built for the Royal Navy. She was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders at Scotstoun on the Clyde. She was launched on 2 March 1991 by Mrs Jane King, the wife of the then Secretary of State for Defence, in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Wellington. She was accepted into service by the Royal Navy on 23 July 1992 and commissioned on 20 May 1993. HMS Iron Duke is one of the most advanced ships in the Royal Navy, carrying an array of weapons and sensors. These include Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles, Stingray Torpedoes, Vertical Launch Sea Wolf Anti-Air Missiles and a 4.5" Mk 8 gun for shore bombardment. She can be employed in a variety of roles but her primary role is anti-submarine operations for which she is well equipped with the latest computer assisted Sonar systems and communications equipment. She carries a Mk 8 Lynx Helicopter which can also be used in a variety of roles.
